Be You…Always

When we are born, a lot of things are decided for us by our parents.

And to their credit, the decisions they made for us are undoubtedly born out of doing what they felt was best for us at the time. The vision parents have for us helps shape and mold us into whom we become as adults. Something tends to happen though. People eventually realize who they really are or maybe only see glimpses of it if they are strongly bonded with a variety of influences (family, environment, society, etc). But, even if you realize who you are, do you take the time to honor it and live it?

The problem is, we don’t know how to listen to that part. The one saying “Hey, you are the girl who shaves half her head. Yeah, you!” Wait, what? What would people think? Is that even an option here? YES. Yes, it is.

The first step is understanding who you are. Once you start to uncover who you are and what your values are and how you want to take up space in this world, then you can start actively choosing things for YOU. What a scary proposition, huh?

But, how do you get there?

Self-reflection, awareness, and a dash of being ready to own it. There is a level of building up the confidence to get there, but you got this. Be brave. Your brain is most likely telling you two stories here. The loud one telling you, “No, we aren’t allowed or shouldn’t do XYZ.” And the quieter one saying, “Oh, it would be so nice if I could finally… And I really would love to…”

Let’s listen to the second one. How we show up in life, influences what happens in it. If we pretend to be something we aren’t so we fit in, how not awesome would you feel all the time? Pretending on something small might not seem consequential. But, it is a key indicator of how you show up in all aspects of your life.

When people talk about their “work personality” vs their “home personality”, it is quite an interesting thing.

That person is both of those personalities ALL of the time. It means that they let one part of themselves out of the mental cage during certain times of the day. And, how exhausting?

If you can let go of the fear and things holding you back, you can be all of you, ALL OF THE TIME. And, that clears your mental space to do the things important to you. Thinking of your own life, how can you clear your mental space so you get to be you… always?
